Behind the Scenes - Wild Komb
Happy Friday!! This shoot with Wild Komb is one of my favorites so I'm excited to take you behind the scenes and show you how it all came together. I wrote a post recently on our main site about the mood board and inspiration for this shoot which you can find here.
Wild Komb is a kombucha brand based in South Korea and they wanted images that showed their ingredients and flavors while elevating their brand as their price point is a little higher than other brands in their area. They love Kinfolk and wanted us to create a Kinfolk-inspired dinner party with a lot more color and more playfulness.
For this shoot, we purchased some surfaces from Photo Surfaces which I mentioned in my post on backgrounds. We used those along with colored tile, painted boards, and fabric to create the scenes. The props that we used were florals, ingredients, dishes/glasses, and other food items. I'll take you through each shot and talk through how we created it, to see the final images head over to this page.
This gif was focused on Lychee Rose which is Wild Komb's most popular flavor. Because of this we really focused on ingredients - tea, honey, rose, and lychee. We added some grapes in there as well because the color went so well. One thing we had discussed was creating a "kitchen" and I knew that I wanted to use colored tile. I had made tiled backgrounds before, but I wasn't sure how it would work to color them so I tried to find tile online that was already colored. It was all really expensive with long delivery times, so I decided to try my hand at making my own. I have more information about how to create a tile background in this post, but essentially I spray painted them with matte spray paint before I grouted them, and it worked out so well! This is a great way to create an interesting environment that is fairly easy and affordable.
Next up is this shot that focused on the Pineapple Hops flavor. This ended up being my favorite shot from the shoot which I wasn't expecting. I just really love the colors and how everything came together. As you can see from the screenshots of the computer, we weren't able to get both of my hands in the scene the way that we wanted while also not having my head haha. My body just couldn't bend like that, so we ended up shooting each hand separately and compositing them together.
You can also see that in one of the images I'm wearing a green shirt which was the original plan. Once we saw it all together, we realized that having the orange sweater as a pop of color and including the orange flower along with it was much more interesting than the monochrome scene we had planned. We do love monochrome, but in this case it just worked better. This is an example of not being so married to your original ideas that you miss out on opportunities to improve them on set.
This shot was definitely the most "dinner party" of all the shots. The challenge here was including enough items to make it interesting without overwhelming the scene. We had fun playing around with food styling and included some pretty edible flowers. We used a surface from Photo Surfaces as a wall instead of a base which added some subtle texture.
This group shot was also challenging just because of how much we needed to fit in. We needed to include all 6 flavors, so we decided to lay some of them down to make them fit better and add some interest. We started by placing the bottles first since those had to be in the scene and then we just kept adding and removing things until everything was perfect.
Last up is this gif that we made with our little studio fridge. Wild Komb had requested a gif with a fridge full of fruit and florals with different hands reaching in to take out the bottles. Originally we were going to shoot it on just tan, but then we realized we could put the yellow tile under the fridge and I'm really glad that we did. All of the hands that you see are mine and Arabela's- we just changed shirts in between each image haha. We had to plan it out as far as which bottle we would take each time and we had to shoot it a few times to get it just right.
There you have it - all the scoop behind our shoot for Wild Komb! If I missed anything or if you have any questions, feel free to ask below! And don't forget to check out the final images here.
Is it the weekend yet?
